Dining out in Harlem for Thanksgiving 2014? The List!
If you haven’t pulled it together by now for dinner tomorrow have no fear…MAKE A RESERVATION! I’ve culled a couple of spots in Harlem for you to lay your worries at THEIR doors. Thank me later!
Chez Lucienne – 308 Lenox Avenue, 212.289.5555, 1pm to closing – Amongst their traditional French fare like onion soup, coq au vin and their burger menu, Chez Lucienne will be serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal of organic turkey with chesnut and sausage stuffing, sweet potato, green beans, turkey jus and fresh cranberry sauce for $24. I enjoyed my Thanksgiving two years ago here and I feel like I didn’t miss a tasty note of this holiday meal.
Red Rooster – 310 Lenox Avenue, 212.792.9001, 5:30pm-10:30pm – For $55 per person, you can enjoy a 3-course prix fixe menu starting with either butternut squash soup with rosemary, maple, chorizo and pecans or a market green salad with mushrooms, pickled squash, cranberries and spiced pepitas and cornbread with honey butter and tomato jam. Your main course will be a Thanksgiving plate with roast turkey, sausage cornbread dressing, cranberry orange chutney and Madeira giblet gravy. You have a choice of two sides including smoked cheddar gratin, collard greens, mac and cheese and Brussels sprouts with bacon and mustard vinaigrette. For dessert a chocolate pretzel sweet potato pie with ginger ice cream will land in front of you! No doing dishes afterwards!
Settepani – 196 Lenox Avenue, 917.492.4806, 3pm-8pm – For $45 per person, Settepani is giving thanks with a 2-course prix fixe dinner that starts with organic fresh roasted turkey with choice of 3 stuffings: sauteed bread with shallots, sausage and sage, wild mushroom with rice or corn bread with bourbon, pecan and sausage. Choice of sides include brussel sprouts with crispy pancetta (optional), roasted sweet potatoes and beets, baked butternut squash with butter and maple syrup, orange-glazed cranberries, mashed potatoes with celery root, pureed sweet potatoes and carrots with ginger, sauteed kale with currants and pinenuts and of course (what would an Italian Thanksgiving be without pasta?) penne al forno. The sweet ending has myriad choices of pies (sweet potato, pecan, apple, cherry, blueberry, coconut custard) and cheese cakes (pumpkin, sweet potato, cherry).
The Cecil (210 West 118th Street, 212.866.1262) and Minton’s (206 West 118th Street, 212.243.2222) will be serving separate menus for Thanksgiving. Minton’s has a 3-course $75 per person prix fixe. Start with…creole ceasar salad (parmigiano reggiano, skillet cornbread croutons, okra), deviled eggs (pickle relish, bourbon cured salmon), roasted pumpkin soup (roasted chestnuts), foie gras cranberry jam (pumpkin seed toast). The main courses are: cane citrus glazed poussin (giblet dressing, braised greens), bourbon praline ham (bourbon yams, snap beans), smothered shrimp crab meat gravy (stoned ground grits, mustard greens), southern cut prime rib (creole pepper sauce, sweet cracked potatoes). Finally the last bites can be chocolate baked Alaska or sweet potato deep-dish pie with praline cream. Sounds like a winner menu
The Grange (1635 Amsterdam Avenue, 212.491.1635) have Thanksgiving menus as well. The Grange is offering three a la carte Thanksgiving courses – seasonal soup, full Thanksgiving plate ($25) and a seasonal dessert – as well as their full appetizer and dessert menus. That means The Grange could be the perfect place to go even post big meal for coffee, cocktails and sweets. A mobile Thanksgiving if you will.
I am sure there are others too. I peeped Corner Social and Maison Harlem this week. Of course there is Sylvia’s and Amy Ruth’s too for a traditional southern Thanksgiving.
Whatever you do I wish the happiest of Thanksgivings. Raise a glass or two…or three and be grateful! You know it is hard to do, but just fold in.
